Quite simply, the dish is grilled lettuce.
My friend bought romaine hearts and sliced them lengthwise. She drizzled them with olive oil and then threw them on the grill for a couple of minutes on each side until they were just a little bit charred around the edges. She dressed them with balsamic vinegar and voila! Tasty, interesting and easy vegetable side.
We discussed over dinner other kinds of dressing that would go well and were all intrigued by the thought of blue cheese dressing... My friend indicated that she had made the dish with caesar dressing before for a sort of grilled caesar salad. You could also add additional "salad" bits such as toasted nuts, chopped tomatoes, bacon bits... Be creative!!
One last important component: Leave the core of the lettuce in tact while cooking because it will keep the leaves together for you. The leaves will taste bitter down towards the core though!
